Aereo files countersuit against broadcasters Mar 12th 2012, 19:25 Mon Mar 12, 2012 3:25pm EDT (Reuters) - Aereo Inc, a new online television service backed by Barry Diller's IAC/InterActiveCorp, has filed a countersuit against several broadcasters, seeking a declaration that it does not infringe their copyrights. The countersuit was filed 11 days after broadcasters including Walt Disney Co's ABC, CBS Corp and Comcast Corp's NBCUniversal and Telemundo sued Aereo, seeking an injunction to stop its alleged plan to retransmit their programs without permission. In the countersuit filed Monday with the U.S. District Court in Manhattan, Aereo claimed that its service is legal, and that it has not received from the broadcasters any formal notice to abandon a planned March 14 startup date. "Consumers use the Aereo technology to do no more than what they are entitled to do: access local television broadcasts on the public airwaves using an individual antenna; create unique copies of that broadcast content for their own personal use; and play back their unique recordings to their televisions or other viewing devices for their personal use," the company said.
